VMware Boxer for iOS (Stand-alone)

Updated on

When employees onboard with new technology they don't always follow the steps or processes outlined by their IT admin.  Occasionally, they may not want their entire corporate app suite on their device and will just go to the app which will bring them the most value straight away.

This is why VMware has created stand-alone functionality for the VMware productivity apps. Now, when an employee attempts to download VMware Boxer, Browser, or Content Locker without having Workspace ONE or a management profile on their device they can still use the apps as they were intended to be used. This feature can be turned on or off by the IT administrator. In this guide, we'll walk through using VMware Boxer without Workspace ONE or a management profile on the device.

Before You Begin

In order to complete this demo please make sure you have the following:

  • An iOS device
  • A valid account in the VMware TestDrive environment, sign up here if you don't
  • Activated the Workspace ONE UEM and Office 365 service from the Empower Digital Workspace tab in the VMware TestDrive Demo Portal
  • Network access from your device and TCP port 443 enabled on your network

Download VMware Boxer on your Unmanaged Device

First, navigate to the App Store on your unmanaged, unenrolled iOS device. Download VMware Boxer to your device.

Once VMware Boxer is installed, launch the app.  You'll be asked to enter your email address.

Locate your TestDrive Email Address and Credentials on the Portal

Your TestDrive email address follows the below format:

[TestDriveUsername]@vmtestdrive.com

If you're unsure what your TestDrive email address is, you can verify this in the TestDrive portal by following the steps below:

  1. Login to portal.vmtestdrive.com with your username and password
  2. Click on the dropdown next to Workspace ONE in the Ready to Use Experiences section to view your credentials
  3. Here you will find your TestDrive email address

Enter your TestDrive Email Address

Here we will enter our TestDrive modified email address into Boxer and select "Get Started".

Authenticate using your TestDrive Credentials

Next, you'll be asked for your username and password. Enter your TestDrive username and password (without the domain) and select Login.

Get Started

Next, click "Get started".

Configuration Complete

Boxer Standalone app will fetch all the necessary authentication certificates and launch you into the Mailbox.

View your Email, Contacts, and Calendar on your Unmanaged Device

Now your device will be configured with your email, contacts, and calendar invites on your unmanaged device.

Delete your Device Record from UEM Console

Before proceeding to enroll into another flow, log in to Workspace ONE UEM environment and navigate to the Intelligence & Tenant Administrator at TestDrive role, locate your device, and delete the record. This will wipe all email content from the Boxer application on your device, and you will get a message saying the same on the app, thus keeping all your data secure.
