App Volumes Writable Volumes User Installed Applications (UIA) Demo

In this quick walkthrough we're going to applications that persist from a non persistent desktop pool, using App Volumes Writable Volumes

Walkthrough Summary

  • Open Testdrive Workspace ONE and log in with your Test Drive credentials
  • Launch the Desktop pool called TD-WINDOWS10 
  • Launch the shortcut on the desktop called "App Volumes Manager"
  • Navigate to the Writeable tab
  • Search for your username to filter out your Writeable volume
  • View your Writable configuration
  • Close App Volumes Manager.
  • Install Notepad++
  • Log out of TD-WINDOWS10 Desktop
  • Log back in to TD-WINDOWS10 Desktop
  • Open Notepad++
  • VM is different, but installed application persisted with App Volumes UIA
  • Log out of TD-WINDOWS10 Desktop

In order to perform the full end-to-end demo make sure you have the following:

  • A valid account in the VMware TestDrive environment, sign up here if you don't
  • Network access from your device and TCP ports 80, 443 and 4172 & UDP 4172 enabled
  • An appropriate Horizon client installed on your device
  • An appropriate web browser (such as Google Chrome) installed on your device

Let's get started, open up your favorite web browser and get sign into Workspace ONE.

Click the "Open" Button and  Launch "TD-WINDOWS10" 

From the Windows Desktop, launch the shortcut called "App Volumes Manager" 

Log in with your Testdrive credentials (Note: You will have read-only access to the Appvolumes Manager Console)

Choose the Inventory button and navigate to the Writables tab

Click on Filter and type your Username

Expand your Writable Volume. Click "Edit"

Log out of Appvolumes Manager and navigate to https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/

Install the application with defaults, and check the option to install a shortcut on the desktop.

Check the box to launch the application when finished.

After Notepad++ launches, close it. 

Right click on the start button and launch the command prompt

Type in Hostname. Make a note of it. 

Log out of TD-WINDOWS10 Desktop

Wait a few minutes for the logoff process to complete.

From https://testdrive.vidmpreview.com once again click the "Open" Button and  Launch "TD-WINDOWS10" 

Click the Notepad++ Shortcut on the desktop

 Right click on the start button and launch the command prompt

Type in Hostname.  

The installation has persisted to your new TD-WINDOWS10 Desktop VM as it resides on your App Volumes Writable Volume. 

Log out of the TD-WINDOWS10 Desktop

This completes the App Volumes Writable Volumes User Installed Applications (UIA) Demo
